Aging Lines Vs. Sleeping Lines

Blog post December 14th, 2018 by Holly Shipley, PA-C

Wrinkles from aging (*shown in green on first photo) are typically horizontal lines that are caused by repetitive muscle movements, such as raising your brows. Aging lines can be treated with #Botox or #Dysport to relax the muscle, which will prevent the wrinkles from deepening and setting in.

Sleeping lines are different (*Shown in red on the first photo). They are vertical lines caused by prolonged pressure to the side of the face. This happens when we squish our faces into our pillow at night. (*check out last photo!) As we lose collagen over the years, sleeping lines can linger throughout the day and stay longer than they did when we were younger.

Why is this important?

Well, sleeping lines unfortunately DO NOT go away with Botox or Dysport because they are not caused by repetitive muscle movements. Cosmetic treatments, such as fillers, or collagen producing treatments like lasers can help smooth out the skin, but sleeping on your back is the best way to prevent these creases. For those who cannot sleep on their back, I recommend silk pillow cases and/or beauty pillows that reduce the amount of pressure on the face during the night.
