What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure which involves the removal of excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure is done to give the eyes a more youthful and pleasing appearance. Blepharoplasty can also be done in order to remove excess skin from saggy eyelids that can interfere with vision. Dr. Greene takes great care in producing a natural result that restores youthful contour to the face.
How is blepharoplasty performed?
Blepharoplasty is typically done though well-concealed incisions. At times, a small amount of fat is removed from the eyelids. However, in some patients, this fat removal is avoided. In the past, fat was removed in the majority of blepharoplasty operations, but this led to some having a ‘hollowed out’ appearance. For this reason, some patients do not have any fat removed during surgery. In these patients, fat may actually be re-positioned or even added to restore a youthful appearance. The best surgical plan for each patient is discussed during the consultation with Dr. Greene.
Does eyelid surgery require anesthesia?
Anesthesia is required for eyelid surgery, most commonly local anesthesia combined with sedation. In select patients who only require a conservative removal of skin, this procedure can be performed in our office with only a local anesthetic.
Where does eyelid surgery take place?
Eyelid surgery takes place in our office, an outpatient surgical center, or in a hospital.
Is blepharoplasty an inpatient or outpatient procedure?
Blepharoplasty is typically done as an outpatient procedure, and the patients usually go home on the same day. It is rare that an overnight hospital stay is required.
Does eyelid surgery cause any scars?
Blepharoplasty usually produces very well-hidden scars. Incisions for upper eyelid surgery are typically placed within normal eyelid creases and folds. Dr. Greene typically performs lower blepharoplasty with incisions inside the eyelids. On some occasions, incisions are placed just below the lash line. Regardless of the incision chosen, the scars are usually not noticeable.
Can eyelid surgery fix dark circles under the eyes?
These may slightly improve with lower eyelid surgery. Dark pigmentation of the eyelid skin is more appropriately treated with laser resurfacing and chemical peels. However, the ‘dark circles’ that patients describe are often shadows that form under the eyes. These can be addressed by improving the contour of the lower eyelid, often done by re-positioning fat or by adding volume.
How long do the results of eyelid surgery last?
The results of blepharoplasty are usually long-lasting.
Is blepharoplasty ever covered by insurance?
When blepharoplasty is performed for cosmetic purposes, insurance is not available to cover any of the costs. In certain circumstances, eyelid surgery may be covered to some degree when used to treat excess skin of the upper eyelids that is causing visual impairment.
When can I go back to work after eyelid surgery?
Bruising and swelling after eyelid surgery can be noticeable for at least seven to ten days. Nevertheless, patients often find that they can return to work within a few days after their procedure and some opt to wear makeup to conceal discoloration.
What kind of recovery should I expect after eyelid surgery?
You can expect to have some bruising and swelling that generally fades between seven and ten days. Makeup can be applied to help conceal discoloration. Though some patients may return to work within a few days, more rigorous activities, such as exercise, should be avoided for at least a week.
When are the stitches removed after eyelid surgery?
Typically, the stitches that Dr. Greene uses in blepharoplasty dissolve in about a week, and do not require removal. If stitches are placed that require removal, this is usually done about five days after eyelid surgery.
Do you offer financing for eyelid surgery?
Plastic surgery procedures can often be financed. You can discuss this further during your complimentary consultation.
