Neck Lift – Fort Lauderdale / weston

One of the most common signs of aging is a sagging neck that can also lead to a ‘double-chin’ appearance. This can result from a combination of fat accumulation, muscle weakening, and skin inelasticity. These factors may lead to a ‘heavy’ neck appearance or vertical bands running from the chin to the base of the neck.

Reshaping of the neck can be done in combination with a face lift procedure or as an isolated neck lift operation. The usual goals of neck lift surgery include eliminating vertical bands at the front of the neck, sculpting a desirable neck angle, obtaining a flattened contour under the chin, and tightening of sagging, redundant neck skin. Some patients may benefit from removal of excess fat, such as with liposuction.

Dr. Greene formulates a customized treatment plan according to the patient’s needs and underlying facial anatomy. Many patients do not want or need a complete face lift, and may instead be good candidates for a neck lift. These incisions are extremely well concealed, and are found under the chin and behind the ear.

Dr. Greene utilizes advanced techniques to produce outstanding, natural results and give patients a youthful, contoured neck. While he often performs a neck lift in conjunction with a facelift, in some patients a neck lift alone can achieve an outstanding result. Dr. Greene is highly regarded for his expertise with neck rejuvenation, and was invited to co-author a textbook chapter on neck rejuvenation and neck lift surgery.

Good Candidates

  • Double-chin appearance
  • Vertical bands running from the chin to the neck
  • Excess fat under the chin
  • Healthy men and women who can undergo anesthesia

Anesthesia & Surgery Length

Most surgeries are performed in an operating room in an outpatient surgery center or hospital. General anesthesia or a combination of sedation and local anesthesia are used in most cases for patient comfort. The procedure typically takes between two to four hours to complete, but this depends on the extent of surgery.

A neck lift can be performed in a number of ways. For young patients who only have bulging fat, neck liposuction may be all that is needed. For patients with vertical bands in the front of the neck, tightening of the muscles of the neck is often done. And for those with more excess skin and lax neck muscles, the neck skin may be lifted off of the muscles. A neck lift almost always requires a well-hiddne incision below the chin. For patients with excess neck skin, another incision may be made behind the ear. After the neck musculature is tightened, the incisions are carefully closed with specialized suturing techniques.

While some patients may stay overnight in the hospital, most patients are able to return home after the surgery. Sutures are removed from the skin incisions in less than a week. Patients typically return to normal social activities within 10-14 days. Discomfort is minimal and easily controlled. However, we will prescribe medication for you to ensure comfort throughout the post-operative healing period. The majority of patients are well-healed after two weeks and are able to then enjoy the benefits of their more youthful appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a neck lift?

A neck lift is a surgical procedure that addresses excess fat and sagging skin of the neck.

Who is a good candidate for a neck lift?

Any individual with neck fullness, sagging neck skin, or vertical neck bands may be good candidates or a neck lift. Patients with a poorly-defined jawline or sagging lower face may benefit from a facelift as well.

Who can undergo a neck lift?

Appropriate candidates for neck lifts include physically healthy men and women who have realistic expectations and are looking to improve the appearance of a sagging neck or neck banding.

Are there any limitations to what a neck lift can achieve?

Neck lifts only address the neck itself. While it can lead to improvements of the jawline, other problems with the lower face, such as jowling, may be better treated with a facelift at the same time as the neck lift.

Where is a neck lift procedure performed?

Dr. Greene performs facelifts and neck lifts at an outpatient surgical center or in a hospital. In almost all cases, this is an outpatient procedure and patients can go home the same day.

What type of anesthesia is used during a neck lift?

The neck lift may be performed with either local anesthesia combined with sedation or with general anesthesia.

Where are the incisions made for a neck lift?

Neck lift incisions are well-concealed, as they are typically located underneath the chin and sometimes behind the ears.

How long does an actual neck lift procedure last?

A neck lift procedure typically takes two to three hours to complete. Additional time would be required if a face lift is performed as well.

What is the recovery like after a neck lift?

After a neck lift, bruising and swelling is likely to occur and it can take several weeks to resolve. Some patients also experience numbness for a few weeks. Typically discomfort is mild and easily controlled with analgesics. Most patients return to work within ten to fourteen days, but this can vary.

When can I exercise after a neck lift?

Strenuous activities and exercise should be avoided for at least three weeks following the procedure.

When are sutures removed after a neck lift?

Stitches are typically removed within seven to ten days.

Is financing available for a neck lift?

Financing is available, and our staff will be happy to discuss these options with you.
