Preventing an Undesired Result
It is well known among rhinoplasty surgeons, and many patients, that rhinoplasty is probably the most difficult and least predictable of all of the facial plastic surgeries. Since the surgery is based on modifying structural elements to change the nasal shape, there is a highly unpredictable element found in the re-draping of nasal skin. Certain skeletal modifications can have profound effects on the wound healing process and on the final appearance of the skin. This is where the ‘art’ of rhinoplasty is found. The surgeon must have an understanding of long-term changes and how to control them.
A thorough explanation of complications that can occur after rhinoplasty is well beyond the scope of an internet discussion. Nevertheless, it is important for the patient to understand that while complications can sometimes not be explained, they are not random events. Many complications occur because of poor technique or an inadequate understanding of nasal surgery.
No surgeon can guarantee that a complication will not occur. However, an experienced rhinoplasty surgeon will know how to best avoid complications and produce a more predictable result. I always tell my patients that I can never guarantee a perfect result; rather, with my rhinoplasty techniques and philosophy, I can achieve a more predictable result. Be wary of any surgeon who guarantees success or a particular result.
