Choosing a Rhinoplasty Surgeon
As a rhinoplasty specialist, I dedicate much of my practice to rhinoplasty. Through my unique philosophy and approach, I have personally developed a comprehensive rhinoplasty treatment plan to optimize surgical results. I also emphasize a number of different criteria to help guide patients through the process of choosing a rhinoplasty surgeon:
- Rhinoplasty Emphasis – According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average plastic surgeon performs approximately one rhinoplasty per month. Rhinoplasty is a very demanding operation, and one that requires experience and constant critical analysis of one’s own results. For this reason, it is extremely important to select a true rhinoplasty specialist who performs rhinoplasty on a regular basis.
- A Customized Approach – As no two noses are alike, I tailor the surgery according to the needs and desires of each individual patient. I call my approach ‘customized rhinoplasty.’ Unfortunately, some surgeons adopt a ‘cookie cutter’ approach, where they perform the same surgery on every patient. An experienced rhinoplasty specialist, on the other hand, will rarely perform the same rhinoplasty twice.
- Academic Involvement – In general, surgeons who are involved with research and teaching tend to adopt more current techniques. They are also very well respected among their peers.
- Thorough Consultations – If your rhinoplasty consultation lasts only 15 minutes, this should be a red flag. Planning a rhinoplasty takes a careful assessment and communication between the patient and physician. A rushed consultation is a recipe for disaster, and increases the risk that the surgeon will not deliver what the patient desires.
- Exceptional Training – Rhinoplasty is one of the most difficult plastic surgeries to perform, and requires years of training. Surgeons who were trained by a rhinoplasty specialist in both residency and fellowship tend to have an advanced understanding of rhinoplasty. They are also less likely to adopt a ‘cookie cutter’ approach. My recommendation is to seek a rhinoplasty specialist with advanced rhinoplasty training.
- Attention to Breathing – Every rhinoplasty surgery can cause severe problems in nasal breathing, if performed without attention to the nasal airway. If during your consultation, the surgeon does not assess your airway, this could be an indication that the surgeon does not have a certain level of understanding of nasal surgery.
- Publications – Physicians who are respected within their specialty are often asked to co-author manuscripts and book chapters. These physicians are also more involved in the evolution of their specialty and are more aware of cutting-edge techniques.
- Natural Results – A review of a surgeon’s before and after photos can help the patient to better understand if a surgeon tends to produce natural results without an ‘operated look.’
Finding the best rhinoplasty surgeon can be a confusing process. However, with careful research and an understanding of what to look for, a patient will be much more successful in their search.
